Religous fundamentalists have always had a penchant for Old Testament-style narratives, claiming natural disasters as evidence of God's anger against all those sinful, usual suspects. In the case of Hurricane Katrina, the fault lay, not with the criminal neglect of New Orleans' flood defences, but with the wickedness of gays and abortion clinics in the district. Never underestimate the capacity of religious extremists to demonise the 'godless other' during disasters, while completely ignoring the socio-economic dynamics of neo-liberal capitalism that are the fundamental cause of environmental and social breakdown.
