Picasso's painting is rightly considered one of the greatest works of 20th Century art. But the symbolism it portrays of aerial warfare against a civilian population needs to be set against the living history of Guernica as a centre of resistance to fascism during the Spanish Civil War and one fiercely proud of its independence. Guernica represents, not just the horror of modern warfare, but the struggle of working-class communities all around the world against authoritarian regimes. Even in the darkest of times, that struggle serves as a beacon of hope for a future based on democratic socialism.
