about
I’ve always hated the term homeland, redolent, as it is, with fascism. Automatically, if there is a homeland, there has to be an enemy. The capitalist elite can demonise ‘the other’ and in doing so, construct a gigantic military- industrial-complex for permanent war preparation that benefits them at the expense of working people. The very ideals of democracy and freedom are perverted by authoritarian governments to create a surveillance society with draconian powers to arrest and detain, and to carry out illegal forms of warfare - all in defence of the homeland. Purity of essence refers to the airforce commander, Jack D. Ripper, in Kubrick’s brilliant satire on nuclear war, ‘Dr Strangelove’, who sends the bombers off to deliver a nuclear strike, convinced his precious bodily fluids are being diluted by communist infiltrators. He encapsulates perfectly the combination of neo-fascism, insanity and, ultimately, armageddon, that loyalty to the homeland dictates.
