about
Dulce et decorum est...At one level, the song is a simple statement that the vast majority of casualties in modern warfare have been civilians but, apart from the Hiroshima memorial and a handful of others, there are no public monuments, nor associated ceremonies to reflect on their deaths. The song is inspired by Chris Burden’s sculpture, entitled ‘The Other Vietnam Memorial’, a brave and poignant work of art. Unlike the original Washington Memorial to the fifty thousand US military personnel who lost their lives in the Vietnam War, it lists the three million Vietnamese killed and challenges the viewer to reflect on the ‘enemy’ casualties of war. The song questions how Remembrance Day conflates the experience of two world wars, and a temporary mobilisation of civilians into mass armies for national defence, with western wars of invasion and occupation carried out by professional armies that have left a trail of devastation and social breakdown. Remembrance Day has become a form of collective amnesia about the consequences of western imperialism, psychological conditioning for future wars, and ritual legitimation for the appalling waste of resources on armaments...pro patria mori.
