The Twilight Zone television series and film include the story of an increasingly frantic passenger, on a night flight, who can see a demon tearing up the plane's wing during an electrical storm. The problem is that it is only visible when illuminated by lightning strikes, and all the other passengers and cabin crew think he is simply having a panic attack. (Which, of course, he is!) It serves as a comic metaphor of technological hubris and arrogance. The logical extremes are manned-space flight, terraforming and the colonising of the solar system. For some techno-fanatics, with their warped vision of manifest destiny and the conquest of the universe, Earth is simply a launchpad to be used up and discarded. The real challenge and the one that demands the focus of our scarce, scientific resources is to prevent irreversible climate change, and help save this beautiful planet in all its myriad diversity of life.
