This is one of my favourite songs from the punk/new wave era and, I would argue, an uplifting one. Most people are aware of the circumstances surrounding the death of Ian Curtis, the lead singer of Joy Division, who committed suicide shortly after it was released. Taking the song on its own merits, it deals with the wildly conflicting emotions of attraction and rejection, elevation and heartbreak. Love will tear us apart again, but it will also give us every reason to believe in its abiding strength to lift us back up, and inspire us to better things and better times.
