We have a strangely schizophrenic relationship with other animals. On the one hand we can be capable of great affection, especially for pets and endangered species, while also subjecting billions of them to industrialised slaughter, imprisonment and legalised torture. The song, taking its cue from Daphne De Maurier’s short story, ‘The Birds’, made famous by Hitchcock’s classic film, imagines similar stories of animal revenge on human beings. There is also a rather thinly-disguised, grungy, class-war theme.
