There is a three-stage process employed in the western, capitalist media to deal with radical, socialist leaders as they become popular. Ignore them and hope they go away, ridicule them as fantasists, and then, if that doesn't work and they begin to enjoy widespread support with the real prospect of gaining power, bring on the full weight of personal attacks to systematically demonise them. The song takes that process to the point of absurdity, while also celebrating the strength of character shown by labour-movement leaders who, despite being subject to such vilification, continue to put forward a radical vision of society.
