about
This is a lullaby about the global destructiveness of capitalism. Voltaire’s novel ‘Candide’, published in 1759, provides a satirical demolition of the conservative, religious philosophy that everything is for the best in the best of all possible worlds. No one should question their position in society, however poor and exploited, nor should they agitate for political reform, because the status-quo was pre-ordained by God. Dr Pangloss, Voltaire’s comic fall-guy, is subject to accumulated violence, including torture and the loss of bodily parts, as well as contracting diseases like syphilis, but still comes up smiling in defence of this religious view. Globalised capitalism is the new panglossian religion. To question capitalism is simply sacrilegious, even if it is destroying the planet. Go to sleep my baby, close your pretty eyes. No harm done.
